The radio crackled “Zaventem Tower calling unidentified aircraft flying low over the city. We are unable to fix your position and height. Climb to three thousand feet and follow beacon number five zero. Over.”
I looked at the letters on a fin and picked up the microphone. “Zaventem Tower from Funfair Rocket Xray Lima Five, I am descending into the city. Position Berlaymont. Over.”
“Xray Lima Five, Zaventem Tower, repeat, climb to three thousand feet and follow beacon number five zero. Permission to land in the city refused. Over.”
“Zaventem Tower, Xray Lima Five, negative, e.t.a. in city one minute. Over.”
The retro-rockets fired and slowed the descent.
“Zaventem Tower, Xray Lima Five, I have landed in a flower bed in the rue de la Loi. Over and out.”
I climbed out and walked to my office. My two assistants stared at me. “Hi girls! I've had a hard day and I'm finished for today.” I picked up my jacket and took the train home from the Centraal Station.
“Hello Darling, had a good day?”
She stared at me and kissed me. “Any particular reason why you are wearing a dress today?”
