The word “cole slaw” comes from the Dutch koolsla, for cabbage salad. See perfect coleslaw and coleslaw and cole slaw recipes. Any hard vegetables can be used: red and white cabbage, carrots, apples, gherkins, onions, red and green peppers, celery, nuts.
Shred the vegetables as fine or coarse as you like. Place in bowl. Stir in the other ingredients. Leave to stand for one hour before serving. Store in the refrigerator.
