The word “cole slaw” comes from the Dutch koolsla, for cabbage salad. See perfect coleslaw and coleslaw and cole slaw recipes. Any hard vegetables can be used: red and white cabbage, carrots, apples, gherkins, onions, red and green peppers, celery, nuts.
Chop the vegetables as fine or coarse as you like (with a knife or a food processor). Place in bowl. Stir in the other ingredients. Leave to stand for one hour before serving and stir again. Store in the refrigerator.
