I can't read; I can't write.

I think that there are some things that you must be able to do, just to get on in life, even if you are handicapped in some way.

In our culture you should be able to use a knife and fork to feed yourself from a plate, dress yourself, go to the lavatory, greet other people with “Good day!”, count to hundred, be able to do simple arithmetic, read and write, and so on.

There is this minimum that anyone should be able to do, hopefully a lot more.

I can't read; I can't write.
